Renewing a Trademark

The registration of a national trademark is valid for an initial period of ten (10) years from the application's submission date, which can be renewed indefinitely for further consecutive periods of ten (10) years.

The beneficiary must renew the national trademark within six (6) months before the expiry of the previous protection period. It is noted that renewal, within six (6) months of the expiry of the previous protection period, is allowed by paying an additional renewal fee of fifty percent (50%) of the renewal fee.

In case of non-renewal within the aforementioned period, the Intellectual Property Section proceeds to the strike-off of the national trademark.

  • fifty nine euro (€59) renewal fee for every class of products and services beyond the first in case of electronic filing or sixty (€60) renewal fee for every class of products and services beyond the first in case of submission by hand/post; or

The fees above are payable, depending on the manner of form submission:

  • by credit card, in case of electronic submission;
  • in cash, by cheque, through an account maintained in the Department of Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property, or by bank order, in case of submission by hand/post.

It is noted that the beneficiary may renew particular products or services, by specifying them within the renewal form and paying the corresponding fee.

Provided that the Intellectual Property Section is satisfied that all, depending on the case, legal requirements have been met, proceeds with the issuance of the Renewal Certificate, the updating of the trademarks' register and its publication in the Official Gazette.

In case you wish to request the issuance of certified or uncertified copies, you may submit an application for obtaining trademark's certified copies.
