Discontinuation of Acceptance of Personal Cheques as of 01/01/2026
The Treasury of the Republic of Cyprus announces that as of 1 January 2026, the use of personal cheques for the payment of debts to the State will be abolished, both for natural persons and for legal entities.
In practice, citizens will be able to pay debts to the State easily through the use of immediate, secure, and simple payment methods, such as:
- bank card payments at counters and online, and
- bank transfers, including instant payments, which are completed within seconds.
At the same time, the option of payment by banker’s draft will remain temporarily available; however, a condition will apply for its acceptance in the near future, while the use of cash for transactions up to €10,000 will continue.
This change is being implemented to offer greater convenience, speed, and security to the public.
